But when it comes to the well being of you dog it should be avoided. So is chocolate bad for dogs? It is not only bad it can be downright dangerous.

What chocolate has in it is theobromine, which is almost the same as caffeine. If your dog gets a big enough dose it could have some very powerful side effects or it may even cause death. The amount of theobromine it can take to kill a dog will vary but for now we will go with the lowest amount which is 100mg per kg or 45mg per lb.

Here is a list of different types of chocolate and their levels of theobromine: The toxicity is listed as per pound of bodyweight.

1. Milk chocolate has 45mg/oz and can be toxic at 1 oz per lb.
2. Semi-sweet chocolate has 150mg-260mg / and can be toxic at 1 oz per 3-6 lbs.
3. Baker’s chocolate has 450mg/oz and can be toxic at 1 oz per 10 lbs.
4. Cocoa beans have 450-1500mg/oz and can be toxic at 1 oz per 10-33 lbs

To me trying to figure out how much chocolate you can safely give your dog seem a bit complicated and I think, we’ve answered the question: Is chocolate bad for dogs or not. So in my opinion especially with the safety concerns it would be best not to give your dog any chocolate at all. If your dog does ingest some chocolate it might be wise to contact a vet for further assistance.

Now we know that what to feed your dog does not consist of dry grain type or cereal type ingredients. So I guess we can just feed them the meat type products out of the can. I don’t think so!

The meats or should I say supposed meats in a lot of premium brand canned dog foods are not always real. They can be soy-based meat looking mixtures that are definitely not good for your dog. After spending just a few minutes searching the net I found a premium named canned dog food that actually had “Rice” listed in the title of the product. Not to mention that when I looked at the ingredients the meat listed certainly did not appear to be real. Probably soy-based. A good tip if you must buy canned commercial dog food is to always make sure that the first ingredient is meat. Like turkey, chicken, beef etc. Not a meat-meal, or meat by-product. Another tip is to make sure that there is no “artificial” anything and also no sugar (empty carbs). Now these foods may cost more, but are definitely worth for your pet.

There are a lot of people these days that don’t think commercial dog food is what it presents itself to be. “Its garbage” and “It’s killing your dog!” are things I’m reading about more and more.

Even vets are agreeing that this food is quite bad. But for most people who have very hectic lifestyles this food saves time, money and is very convenient. “The packages say they are healthy, shouldn’t we believe them?” Probably not.

A lot of commercial dog foods these days have grains as their main ingredients. Wheat, rice, soy, and corn based products are among the main types. These are simply not good for your dog. They can cause kidney problems, diabetes, and obesity just to name a few. Dogs are carnivores and are meant mainly to eat meat. Their digestion systems and the obvious one, their teeth structure with the fangs for ripping flesh are clear signs of how they are supposed to eat.

First let me welcome you to the What To Feed Your Dog Blog. Its great to see you here.

The first thing i would like to say is that boy have times changed. We never even used to worry much about what humans ate and now you have to worry about unsafe dog food. The world is getting to be a scary place but we have to roll with it. That’s why sites like this are popping up to address these new problems we have in our world.

Seeing the amount of dog food recalls in the last while might make you wonder what to feed your dog. Wheat gluten which came from China was possibly the main factor in the recalls. Wheat gluten, is a product that is extracted from wheat and has no business being in your dog food. It is something that is very hard for your pet to digest.

There was around 16 cases of pets confirmed dead in the US alone and there could have been thousands more elsewhere, we’ll never know.
